CMA CGM Fidelio Catches Fire off Coast of Spain

The 9,415 TEU containership CMA CGM Fidelio caught fire while it was sailing off the coast of Ibiza, Spain on March 24, a representative of the vessel’s owner, the French shipping giant CMA CGM, confirmed.

The fire, which started in the back of the ship at 4 am, was soon extinguished and CMA CGM Fidelio continued its voyage according to schedule.

An inspection was subsequently conducted aboard the 113,964 dwt boxship. The representative informed that the damage aboard the vessel is minor and will be fixed in the coming weeks.

There were no injuries to the ship’s crewmembers reported following the incident, and the fire did not result in any sea pollution at the site.

Furthermore, the representative said that the fire did not cause any damage to the cargo aboard the 2006-built ship.

According to AIS data provide by MarineTraffic, CMA CGM Fidelio is currently on its way from the Maltese port of Marsaxlokk to the port of Damietta in Egypt, where it is scheduled to arrive on March 29.
