Shipbuilding Industry Urges Government to Abolish Taxes

Wednesday / May 13, 2015

President director of PT Logindo Samudramakmur TBK, Eddy Kurniawan Logam said that Indonesia can take steps to abolish taxes to become one of the world’s leading shipbuilding nation.

Eddy also said that the government is expected to abolish 10% VAT and import duties to the tune of 5-12% for more and more ship production in the country.

According to Eddy the Government was working for exemption of import duties for a few hundred listed shipbuilding items that are not locally produced. Once the tax burdens are removed Indonesia-based yards can be 100% foreign owned as it will appeal to foreign investors to invest into the country to establish shipbuilding businesses, he pointed out.

The Indonesian government announced last year a shipbuilding revitalization program involving some IDR 10.8bn ($822,600) in support funds but it was unclear as to how the funds would come in.
