The policemen were on patrol at the Port, when the group of armed men who were masked, suddenly appeared and opened fire on the patrol boat. One of the five police on the patrol boat, who survived the attack had jumped into the sea and reportedly swam to safety.

It was gathered that the sea pirates who were 24 in number, came in four boats with six of them in each boat. The incident caused terror among the locals who observed the scene. Investigation in to the case is ongoing.

In 2014 there were 67 reported piracy and armed robbery incidents in the Gulf of Guinea, Oceans beyond Piracy said in a recent report, with 60% of them occurring off Nigeria.
